Write up: Pop up Kitchen No.1

Ubuntu Food

Live and Experimental Exchange. Hosted by Koby Studio

The end of September saw Ubuntu Food’s first Pop up Kitchen come to life in a collaboration with KOBY Studio.

KOBY; a Dance Studio based in Leeds, is home to a community of creative people in the North. Underpinned by their ethos ‘King/Queen of being you’ KOBY’s environment is packed with diverse energy and talent. Their classes provide a platform to both aspiring and experienced dancers to train, showcase and learn alongside one another. Styles that they explore are mainly Cultural/Social dance styles such as (but not limited to); Urban, Hip Hop, Popping, Afro, Dancehall and Freestyle.

Discovering KOBY has been a major creative catalyst for me over the past year. An environment which pushed me out of my comfort zone, allowed me to foster new relationships and brought me to question my own creative identity.

I find inspiration in the authenticity and openness of people I spend time with. A lovely person once told me that the KOBY family changed their life, and influenced their perspective. A testament to the outpouring of love and sense community that you feel when you go to train there. A true manifestation of UBUNTU in the heart of West Yorkshire.

It’s needless to say that I was so stoked to create and share my first Pop up Kitchen with these bloody good people. The sun didn’t stop shining and the people didn’t stop smiling. We sold out of all our food and were left feeling totally humbled by the entire experience.

Ubuntu KOBY.

I am, because we are.
